DCN to Release "Canyon: Live in
NYC" on May 20, 2003 Propelled by the distinctive,
instrumental forces of lap steel and slide guitars along with
alternatively swirling organ, accordion, and delicate piano playing,
Washington, D.C.-based Canyon creates a one-of-a-kind blend of driving,
American rock songs, lush, countrified balladry, and powerful, psychedelic
anthems. And now, for their first live album, Canyon will release Live
in NYC on May 20th. Recorded on November 20, 2002, Live in NYC
features several of Canyon's most recognizable, original compositions
("Mansion on the Mountain," "Ten Good Eyes," "Lights of Town" among
others), a few older favorites, and wonderful, extended renditions of the
early Rolling Stones' hit "Play With Fire" and Neil Young's classic tale
of "Cortez the Killer." Live in NYC will be Canyon's first release
with DCN.
Since their formation in late 1999, Canyon has logged
countless miles on the road, and Live in NYC is the culmination of
many late nights spent creating beautiful, musical tales and mastering
their trade. The line-up for the live recording features Brandon Butler on
vocals, guitar, and lap steel guitar, Joe Winkle on guitar (much of which
is slide), Evan Berodt on bass, Derry deBorja on organ and accordion, and
Dave Bryson on drums. With a genre-bending mixture of Crazy Horse-like
guitar power, Pink Floyd-style echo-and-delay experimentation, and
bittersweet vocals, Live in NYC evokes a vast, dusty,
desert-at-twilight feeling. As Canyon's Evan Berodt describes it, "the
album offers a panoramic view into night and the slower days of
supernatural psychic wars. It's all about stories of journeys, bitter
talks in the backrooms of weddings, love at the bottom of the sea, and the
ultimate resurfacing you'll have to survive in order to keep the moon at
your back and the cross off your heel."
Usher Winslett, COO of
DCN, says, "Canyon is one of the most interesting, powerful, hypnotic
bands performing today. The first time I saw them live, I felt like I was
experiencing an important moment in music history — like seeing an early
performance by the Stones, the Doors, or Pink Floyd — and I knew we had to
release a live record. Live in NYC does an amazing job of capturing
the dark, mysterious energy of a live Canyon performance, and we at DCN
are proud to be associated with such a fine band and such a great record."
